Preschool Motor Skills Circuit: Build and Test
Students design and build a six-station motor skills circuit for preschoolers, try it out themselves, and run a safety check on every station. They practice planning around fundamental movement skills, risk prevention, and age-appropriate task design.
How to play
- Make 6 groups of 4 or 5 and give each a skill: crawling, balance, jumping, throwing, rolling on mats, or low climbing (1 min).
- Design and build (8 min): each group sets up its station with the available equipment for 4- and 5-year-olds and makes a sign with a picture of what to do.
- Peer check (3 min): each group inspects the next station using three questions: Are there dangerous edges or gaps? Can you get it without reading? Can two kids go at once?
- Test run (10 min): the whole class moves through the circuit nonstop in a loose line while one member of each group stays at their station as the coach. Switch coaches every 3 minutes.
- Final tweak (3 min): each group makes one improvement and photographs or sketches the final setup for service day.
Rules
- Safety: mats under any jump, roll, or possible fall, and the bench stays flat on the floor or at a slight incline.
- Move through the circuit in one direction with no passing.
- Coaches guide with a hand, never push or lift kids up.
- Each station must take less than 30 seconds.
Variations
Easier
Four stations using setups the teacher provides on picture cards.
Standard
Six student-designed stations with a peer safety check.
Harder
Every station includes two difficulty levels marked with colored cones.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: leads the safety check and station sign, and tries the accessible stations.
- Autism: gets one specific station and a step-by-step setup list.
- Lower fitness: goes through at their own pace and rests while coaching.
Learning goals
- Design movement tasks that fit preschool-age children.
- Spot and fix risks in an equipment setup.
- Coach others while giving safe physical support.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 8
- hoops: 10
- gym bench: 2
- cones: 20
- poles: 8
- beanbags: 12
Teacher tip
Check the bench and mats yourself before the test run. Older students tend to make stations too hard; have them kneel to see each station at a little kid's eye level.
