Positive Coach Shooting Challenge
In pairs, one player shoots from five spots while their coach may only give specific positive feedback and one tip. Pairs compare makes and feelings with different coaching styles, building communication and peer encouragement.
How to play
- Place five cones 3 m (10 ft) around each hoop and form shooter-coach pairs, three pairs per hoop.
- Round 1 (3 min): the shooter goes around the five cones while the coach stays silent; record makes on the sheet.
- Round 2 (3 min): the coach uses only generic phrases like 'nice' or 'come on'.
- Round 3 (3 min): the coach gives specific praise ('great elbow under the ball') and a single tip per shot.
- Switch roles and repeat the three rounds (9 min).
- Wrap-up (4 min): pairs compare makes and how each coaching style felt.
Rules
- No negative comments or teasing at all.
- Each shooter gets their own rebound and returns to the cone outside the lane.
- Only one pair shoots from each cone at a time.
- Safety: nobody stands under the hoop while someone shoots.
Variations
Easier
Shots from 2 m (6 ft) with a lighter ball.
Standard
Three rounds with different coaching styles, then switch roles.
Harder
Add a passive defender, and the coach may only use gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shoot from a wheelchair at a lower hoop from closer.
- Autism or shy students: the coach may use cards with written praise phrases.
- Highly skilled players: jump shots or shots off the dribble.
Learning goals
- Give specific positive feedback to a peer.
- Notice how messages affect performance and motivation.
- Improve basketball shooting technique.

Teacher tip
Write examples of specific praise on the whiteboard before round 3. Scores don't always improve, so also focus on how students felt.
