Position Words Hoop and Cone Challenge

Students travel around the gym and, when they hear a command with a position word (in, on, behind, next to, under), place themselves in relation to a hoop, a cone, or a classmate. Students practice locomotor skills, spatial awareness, and position vocabulary.

How to play

  1. Scatter 25 hoops and 25 cones around the gym. Review the position words with gestures: in, on (standing on a court line), behind, next to, and under (3 min).
  2. Everyone travels freely using the locomotor skill the teacher calls: walk, run, hop, or skip.
  3. On a command such as "In a hoop!" or "Behind a cone!" each student finds an open object and gets in position within 5 seconds. The teacher checks and gives praise (5 min).
  4. Add commands with classmates: "Next to a friend!", "Behind a friend!", and "Under a bridge!", where half the class makes a bridge and the other half crawls under (3 min).
  5. Combine two commands: "Hop, then next to a cone!" or "Two friends in one hoop!" to build attention and cooperation (4 min).
  6. Take turns letting volunteers call the commands to the class (3 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Use only in, on, and next to, with a gesture for each command.

Standard

Five position words and four locomotor skills called with words only.

Harder

Add between, in front of, and around, and give double commands with no gestures.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Speak slowly and exaggerate the gesture at first, then fade it out. For English learners, this game pairs nicely with the vocabulary the classroom teacher is covering that week.
