Pool Noodle Fencing Distance Game and Lunge
A classic fencing drill where partners move in the en garde stance keeping the same distance until one spots the moment and attacks with a lunge. Students work on judging distance, fencing footwork, and reaction speed.
How to play
- Tape 8 x 1.5 m strips on the floor and pair students with a noodle each; review en garde: feet at a right angle, knees bent, sword arm forward (2 min).
- Footwork: advance (front foot first) and retreat (back foot first) on the whistle, in lines, for 4 sets of 30 seconds (4 min).
- Mirror game: the leader advances and retreats freely and the partner keeps the distance where noodle tips almost touch; switch leaders every minute (5 min).
- Lunge: from that distance, extend the arm, push off the back leg, and land with the front knee over the ankle; 10 lunges each to the partner's shoulder (4 min).
- Final game: at any moment the leader lunges at the torso and the partner must escape with a step back. One point per touch or escape; switch roles every 5 attacks (5 min).
Rules
- Only the torso is a valid target; head and neck are off-limits.
- Lunge with a straight arm, never chopping down.
- Stay in your strip; leave 2 m (6 ft) of open space between strips.
- The fencer who gets hit calls 'Touch!'.
Variations
Easier
The leader claps half a second before attacking.
Standard
Free lunge attacks and escapes with a step back.
Harder
After escaping, the defender may counter with a lunge and scores 2 for a touch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice seated, controlling distance with arm extension and trunk lean.
- Visual impairment: wrap the noodle tips in bright tape and have the leader say 'advance' or 'retreat'.
- Fitness level: shorter lunges and 30-second breaks between sets.
Learning goals
- Keep the right distance from an opponent while moving.
- Perform a safe lunge with correct technique.
- React quickly to an opponent's attack.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pool noodles: 26
- tape: 2
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Watch that the front knee doesn't go past the toes on the lunge. If noodles bend too much, cut them in half so they're easier to control.
