Poison Circle
A classic group combative game: holding hands around a hoop, everyone pulls and pushes to make someone else step inside the poison. With no eliminations, players collect letters and switch circles, building strength, agility, and dodging in a setting of controlled contact.
How to play
- Four circles of six students of similar size, gripping wrists around two hoops placed together on the ground (2 min).
- On the signal, everyone pulls, pushes, or shifts to make someone step in a hoop, never letting go and hopping to stay out.
- Stepping in earns a letter of POISON, called out loud; if two players break their grip, both earn a letter. Pause 3 seconds and play on.
- 2-minute rounds; afterward, the two with the fewest letters move to the circle on the right. Four rounds (9 min).
- Fewest letters wins and no one is eliminated. Share tactics to finish (2 min).
Rules
- Grip wrists, never fingers.
- No kicking hoops and no shoulder checks.
- If someone falls, the circle stops until they're up.
Variations
Easier
Use a single hoop in the center and 1-minute rounds.
Standard
Two hoops, 2-minute rounds, and collecting the letters of POISON.
Harder
Add a third hoop outside the circle behind each group, so players have to watch both front and back.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair becomes the moving poison inside the circle.
- Autism or contact avoidance: join a circle holding scarves between hands instead of direct grips.
- Fitness level: group by size and strength and shorten rounds if needed.
Learning goals
- Apply controlled pulling and pushing in a group combative situation.
- Dodge and reposition the feet quickly to avoid stepping in the hoop.
- Follow safety rules and settle close calls by talking them through.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 8
Teacher tip
The riskiest moment is when the circle breaks and someone goes flying; that's why students grip wrists. Use flat hoops or chalk circles if the surface is slippery.
