Playground Detectives: Solve the Mystery
Someone has taken the teacher's whistle, and detective teams must figure out who, where and with what, like a classic mystery board game. Every movement challenge they beat earns a clue that rules out options. Students practice a range of skills, reasoning and teamwork.
How to play
- Tell the case (2 min) and show a poster with 5 suspects, 5 places around school and 5 objects; the teacher keeps the solution in a sealed envelope.
- Make 5 teams of 5 in pinnies, each with a detective sheet for crossing off options.
- Set up 6 challenge stations: beanbag toss into a hoop, dribbling slalom, jump rope, line balance walk, carry relay and target throws at cones.
- When a team beats a challenge, the judge hands over a random clue card, such as "It wasn't in the cafeteria"; the team reads it, crosses off and returns it (18 min of play).
- At the police station (a center hoop), two teams can swap one clue if they complete an extra challenge together: 10 passes without a drop.
- When a team thinks it has solved the case, it tells the teacher privately; if wrong, it keeps investigating. At the end (5 min) open the envelope and congratulate everyone who solved it.
Rules
- The team travels together, and nobody reads other teams' clues.
- Return clue cards to the judge after reading them.
- Steer around others and no pushing at stations.
- Make the final accusation quietly so the case isn't spoiled.
Variations
Easier
Cut it to 3 suspects and 3 places, with no objects.
Standard
Five suspects, places and objects with six challenge stations.
Harder
Add fake clues that must be checked against another clue.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as chief detective who reads and records, and joins adapted stations.
- Visual impairment: large-print clue cards or the judge reads them aloud.
- Lower fitness: stations with two levels to choose from.
Learning goals
- Practice movement skills at a variety of stations.
- Reason as a team to solve a problem.
- Cooperate and share information with other teams.
Equipment for a class of 25
- clue cards: 30
- cones: 12
- assorted equipment sets: 6
- pinnies: 25
Teacher tip
Prepare about 30 clue cards ahead of time and double-check that the solution can be deduced. Made-up school characters, like the talking ball, get lots of laughs.
