Player-to-Player Mini Team Handball by Numbers
A 4-on-4 plus goalie mini team handball game in which each player guards only the opponent wearing the same pinnie number. It teaches getting open to lose your defender and no-contact player-to-player defense.
How to play
- Set up two 20 x 15 m courts with small goals and a 4 m cone area. Make 5 teams of 5 in pinnies numbered 1 to 5; number 5 starts in goal (2 min).
- Players 1 to 4 may only guard and intercept the opponent with their number; a steal from anyone else goes back to the offense.
- Play 16 minutes with the three-step, dribble and three-second rules. On offense, the aim is to get away from your matchup to receive open.
- Every 4 minutes, swap numbers so everyone plays goalie once. The fifth team does a passing challenge on the sideline and rotates in for the team that has played longest.
- Now and then, blow the whistle: everyone freezes like a statue. Each defender standing between their matchup and the goal earns a bonus point.
Rules
- Play the ball only, never the opponent's body or arms.
- Court players may not enter the goalie area.
- Subs enter at midcourt on the sideline and only when play is stopped.
Variations
Easier
The player with the ball cannot be guarded, and defenders stay two meters off.
Standard
Four-on-four plus goalie with no-contact player-to-player defense by numbers.
Harder
No dribbling, so the only way forward is cutting and passing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: their matchup stays one meter away and cannot take the ball; they defend by intercepting nearby passes.
- Autism: keep the same number and the same matchup for the whole activity so the reference never changes.
- Fitness differences: the teacher assigns numbers so every matchup is balanced.
Learning goals
- Get open from a defender to receive with an advantage.
- Guard an opponent by staying between them and the goal.
- Respect the no-contact rule and the assigned matchups.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 4
- pinnies: 25
- cones: 16
- small goals: 4
Teacher tip
Assign numbers carefully so the matchups are even. If a student never gets the ball, teach the V-cut: take a step toward the goal, then come back for the pass.
