Plates on the Move: Spin and Cross the Bench
In pairs, students travel a course with a spinning plate: zigzag, low obstacles and walking along a bench. It combines object control with whole-body balance.

EquipmentSpinning plates with sticks, Swedish benches, cones, mats

How to play
- Review starting and keeping the spin in place (5 min).
- Walk a cone zigzag with the plate spinning; your partner waits at the end (5 min).
- Walk along a gym bench with the plate spinning, with your partner walking alongside as a spotter (6 min).
- Full course in pairs: zigzag, bench, sit down on the mat and stand up, without the plate stopping (6 min).
- Each pair invents a new station and another pair tries it (3 min).
Rules
- The partner always walks beside whoever is on the bench, without holding on unless asked.
- If the plate drops on the bench, step off first and then pick it up.
- Wait your turn behind the start cone.
- Walk, don't run.
Variations
Easier
Course without the bench, with the plate on an open palm and no stick.
Standard
Full course with the stick.
Harder
Full course, switching the plate to the other hand halfway along the bench.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: do the zigzag in the chair and replace the bench with a tape line to follow.
- Students afraid of heights or hesitant: walk the bench without the plate, holding the partner's hand.
- Students with low vision: replace cones with flat rings on the floor, which are easier to follow.
Learning goals
- Keep the plate spinning while walking.
- Improve dynamic balance.
- Spot a partner safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- spinning plates with sticks: 15
- gym benches: 4
- cones: 12
- mats: 4
Teacher tip
Put the benches away from walls with mats on both sides. Common mistake: staring only at the plate on the bench; teach a quick glance at the plate and another at the end of the bench.
