Pirate Coin Map Relay
Each pirate crew has a ship, a hoop, and a simple playground map with numbered X's where coins, actually bottle caps, are hidden. Relay style, each pirate reads the map, runs to an X, brings back a coin and hands the map to the next. It builds basic map reading and speed.
How to play
- Make a playground map with 8 numbered X's and leave a box or hoop at each real spot with 6 caps, one per crew.
- Make 6 crews of 4, each with a ship (a hoop) on the start line. Show everyone the map and line it up with the playground together.
- The first pirate picks an X, circles it with a finger so the crew can see, and runs off holding the map.
- They take one coin at that X, come back, drop it in the ship and hand the map to the next pirate, who must go to a different X.
- The first crew to collect all 8 coins, one from each X, wins. Play two rounds of about 6 minutes.
- Between rounds, move the caps and give each crew a new map.
Rules
- One coin per trip and per X.
- Hand the map over; never throw it.
- Slow down arriving at an X and take turns with other pirates.
- Nobody takes coins from another ship.
Variations
Easier
Only 5 very visible X's and a map with drawings of the playground features.
Standard
Eight numbered X's and a relay with the map in hand.
Harder
The map stays in the ship, so pirates must memorize their X before leaving.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the navigator who picks and points out each X, or makes trips to the closest X's.
- Visual impairment: a raised map made with dot stickers and a guide partner for the trips.
- Fitness level: the farthest X's can be worth two coins for those who want to run more.
Learning goals
- Read a simple playground map to reach a spot.
- Choose the next destination based on what the team already has.
- Run with a purpose while taking relay turns.
Equipment for a class of 25
- maps: 12
- bottle caps: 48
- hoops: 14
Teacher tip
Laminate the maps so they survive tearing and rain. Spread the X's far apart to avoid collisions, and have crews check together which numbers they are still missing.
