Pickleball Three-Number Score Call Game
Pickleball doubles games with traditional side-out scoring: only the serving team scores, and the score is called with three numbers (server's score, receiver's score, and server number). Students learn the rules, stay focused, and self-officiate with a partner.
How to play
- Spend 4 minutes explaining: the call is "our score – their score – server 1 or 2"; the game starts at 0-0-2 because the first team gets only one serve.
- If the serving team wins the rally, it scores and the server switches sides with the partner; if it loses, the partner serves, and after the second server the serve goes to the other team.
- Two pairs per court and one pair off court as scorekeepers, using colored cones to track who should serve.
- Play games to 11, win by 2, or 7 minutes; a wrong score call before the serve means replaying the point.
- The scorekeeping pair rotates in for the losing pair; play three rounds.
Rules
- Nobody serves without calling all three numbers out loud.
- Serve underhand, diagonally, and without landing in the opponents' kitchen.
- For safety, waiting students stand behind the fence or 10 feet behind the baseline.
Variations
Easier
Play rally scoring and only call who is serving.
Standard
Traditional side-out scoring with the three-number call.
Harder
The scorekeeper fills out an official scoresheet and calls kitchen faults.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stays on the left side and the partner handles the side switches.
- Hearing impairment: the score is also shown with fingers.
- Memory challenges or autism: place a card with the score diagram by the net post.
Learning goals
- Apply traditional pickleball doubles scoring.
- Keep track of the score throughout the game.
- Calmly settle questions about the serve.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
The opening "0-0-2" always confuses students: demo it with four volunteers before starting. Walk the courts asking for the score to check they're keeping it.
