Penguin Waddle Tag
A tag game for small spaces where everyone waddles like a penguin, taking tiny steps with a beanbag between the knees, which limits speed and prevents collisions. Students practice dynamic balance, dodging, and teamwork to rescue classmates.
How to play
- Clear the middle of the classroom or small gym. Each student holds a beanbag between the knees and practices the penguin waddle: feet together, tiny steps, arms pressed to the sides like flippers (2 min).
- Pick 3 seals in pinnies, who also waddle like penguins. On the whistle, they try to tag penguins on the shoulders or back.
- Tagged students become icebergs: frozen with flippers out. A free penguin rescues them by waddling one full circle around them.
- Anyone whose beanbag drops stops to fix it and meanwhile can't tag, be tagged, or rescue. Every 2 minutes the seals hand their pinnies to someone else; play 5 rounds (10 min).
- Wrap-up: everyone is an iceberg except 4 penguins, who must free the class as fast as possible (3 min).
Rules
- Tag with an open hand on the shoulders or back, no pushing.
- No running or jumping; always penguin steps.
- Icebergs stay put until rescued.
Variations
Easier
Beanbag in a hand or on the head, with only 2 seals.
Standard
Beanbag between the knees, 3 seals, and rescue by circling the iceberg.
Harder
Beanbag between the ankles, and rescue takes two circles or two penguins holding hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play in a wheelchair or without a beanbag, carrying a ball in the lap as an egg.
- Visual impairment: play holding hands with a guide partner, as a penguin pair.
- Fitness: more challenge with the beanbag at the ankles; less by carrying it in a hand.
Learning goals
- Keep dynamic balance while moving with a restriction.
- Dodge by using open spaces.
- Work together to rescue classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Beanbags: 25
- Pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
The beanbag is what makes this game safe in a small space, so watch for students holding it to run. The waddling giggles are great motivation.
