Penalty Throw Shootout with Rotating Goalies
A team handball penalty shootout in groups of five with a goalie who switches every five shots. It builds shooting accuracy, decision-making against the goalie and handling nerves in a one-on-one situation.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5, each at a small goal. Use cones to mark the penalty line at 6 m and a 3 m line the goalie may not cross (2 min).
- Explain the rule (2 min): the shooter has 3 seconds after the whistle, keeps the pivot foot down until the release and may fake only once.
- Practice (4 min): each student takes two penalty throws in turn; the goalie switches every five shots so everyone takes a turn in goal.
- Team shootout (5 min): the group adds up its goals and the goalie earns a personal point for every save. On the whistle, groups rotate to the goal on their right to face a new goalie.
- Finish (2 min): each student shoots once more and the group discusses which side of the goal worked best.
Rules
- No shots at the head: a ball that hits the goalie above the shoulders cancels the shot.
- The goalie stays behind the 3 m line until the ball leaves the shooter's hand.
- Waiting students line up behind the shooter, never beside the goal.
- Celebrate goals and saves without taunting anyone.
Variations
Easier
Shoot from 4 m while the goalie keeps one arm behind the back.
Standard
Penalty throw from 6 m, 3-second rule and a goalie who switches every five shots.
Harder
The goalie points to a corner, and the shooter has 2 seconds to decide whether to shoot there or the opposite way.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shoot seated from 4 m and play goalie in a narrower cone goal.
- Low vision: use a neon ball, and a teammate claps from the center of the goal to give direction.
- Students anxious under pressure: practice at an empty goal first and face a goalie when they feel ready.
Learning goals
- Shoot accurately to the areas away from the goalie.
- Choose the shot direction by reading the goalie.
- Recognize and manage nerves in a one-on-one.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 10
- small goals: 5
- cones: 10

Teacher tip
Encourage shots to the lower corners, which are the most effective and the safest. Always use soft foam balls so nobody is afraid to play goalie.
