Partner Wall Sit Ball Pass
Partner wall sit sets with students' backs against a wall while they pass a ball in different patterns and count their passes. It builds leg muscular endurance and core stability with a cooperative challenge that takes their mind off the burn.
How to play
- Pairs stand with their backs against the outside wall, 3 ft apart, with one ball per pair. Teach the position: knees at 90 degrees over the ankles and back flat on the wall (2 min).
- Set 1 (30 seconds on, 30 off): chest passes back and forth; count passes without dropping the ball.
- Set 2: overhead passes, which force the back to stay flat against the wall.
- Set 3: rotation pass, bringing the ball to the opposite hip before passing. Set 4: two balls at once.
- Repeat the four sets a second time trying to beat the first-round pass count (8 sets total, about 8 min).
- Final challenge (2 min): groups of 6 line up in a wall sit and send the ball down the line and back; count how many round trips the group finishes in 45 seconds.
Rules
- If the ball drops, grab it and get back into position without losing count.
- Anyone who can't hold it may raise the hips a little, but nobody sits on the ground.
- Safety: knees stay behind the toes, and passes are soft, never thrown hard at the face.
- Breathe normally; no holding your breath.
Variations
Easier
A higher wall sit (less knee bend) and 20-second sets.
Standard
Four passing patterns in 30-second sets with 30 seconds of rest.
Harder
45-second sets, lifting one foot off the ground on every pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: from a wheelchair or chair, pass with the arms raised and the trunk away from the backrest.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell and call 'ball' before each pass.
- Lower fitness: alternate one wall sit set with one standing set of passing.
Learning goals
- Hold an isometric leg contraction for sets of 30 seconds or more.
- Make accurate passes without losing position.
- Work with a partner to improve a shared score.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 13
Teacher tip
Check the position before starting; many students sink too low and load their knees.
