Partner Towel Anti-Rotation Holds
Partner anti-rotation exercises using a towel: one partner pulls steadily and gently to the side while the other keeps the trunk from twisting. Students build the core strength that protects the back when lifting, pushing, or changing direction.
How to play
- Pairs of similar size share a long towel and a yoga mat. Explain the pull scale: 3 out of 10 is light, 5 out of 10 is moderate, and never more than that (2 min).
- Standing press (3 min): A stands sideways to B holding the towel with both hands at the chest; B pulls gently from 5 ft away. A presses the arms straight out, holds 5 seconds without rotating, and pulls back in. 6 reps per side.
- Half kneeling (2 min): the same with one knee on the mat and the other foot forward, which makes it harder to cheat with the hips.
- Towel plank (3 min): A holds a high plank and grips one end of the towel with one hand; B pulls gently to the side for 10 seconds and A keeps the hips from rotating. 3 per hand.
- Surprise tug (2 min): A holds the standing press with arms out; B gives small tugs at unexpected moments and A has to stop them instantly. 30 seconds per side.
- Switch roles after each exercise; wrap up (2 min) on how this helps in daily life.
Rules
- The puller builds force gradually, with no jerks and no suddenly letting go.
- The resister keeps belly button and chest facing forward.
- Safety: if you lose balance, let go of the towel and say 'stop.'
Variations
Easier
A very light pull (2 out of 10) and only the standing press with arms close to the chest.
Standard
Standing press, half kneeling, towel plank, and surprise tugs at moderate force.
Harder
Single-leg press or a feet-together plank for less stability.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated press in a chair, holding the towel with straight arms while the partner pulls lightly.
- Visual impairment: the puller says 'ready' before increasing force.
- Higher strength: step closer to the puller to lengthen the lever and hold for 10 seconds.
Learning goals
- Resist a rotational force while keeping the spine stable.
- Control the force applied to a partner responsibly.
- Connect core stability to preventing back pain.
