Partner Rep Pyramid
In pairs, students climb up and down a rep pyramid (1-2-3... up to 8 and back to 1) of two bodyweight exercises while their partner runs to a cone. It combines strength and endurance with built-in rest and plenty of teamwork.
How to play
- Pair students up with one yoga mat. Place a cone about 30 feet from each mat. Pick two exercises: squats and modified push-ups (2 min).
- Explain the pyramid: on step 1, do 1 squat and 1 push-up; on step 2, two of each... up to 8, then back down to 1 (1 min).
- While A does the step, B runs to the cone and back. When B returns, they switch: B does the same step and A runs (about a 10-minute block).
- Partners call out their step number so they don't lose track.
- Pairs who finish early climb back up to 4 with a new exercise of their choice (core or jumps).
- Wrap up with a 2-minute discussion: which step brought the most fatigue and how they kept their form (2 min).
Rules
- Every rep is complete: lower to the agreed depth and come all the way up.
- The cone run is at your own pace; go around the cone without touching it.
- Don't start a step until your partner is back.
- Mats are lined up with a clear lane left open for running.
Variations
Easier
The pyramid only goes up to 5 and push-ups are done against the wall.
Standard
Pyramid up to 8 and back to 1 with squats and modified push-ups.
Harder
Add a third exercise, such as crunches, and take the pyramid up to 10.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: complete the pyramid with seated arm and core exercises while the partner moves.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: switches are signaled with a tap on the shoulder and the step number with fingers.
- Lower fitness level: walk to the cone and choose knee push-ups on every step.
Learning goals
- Build muscular endurance with bodyweight exercises.
- Alternate work and active recovery independently.
- Cooperate with a partner to keep track of the task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- cones: 13
Teacher tip
The high steps come when fatigue is greatest, so watch lower backs during push-ups and let students drop a level. In a small gym, shorten the cone distance to about 20 feet.
