Partner Punch-and-Squat Countdown Ladder
A partner countdown ladder: while one partner throws straight punches into the mitts, the other does squats in stance, and reps drop from 10 to 1. It combines leg strength, upper-body endurance and teamwork toward a shared time goal.
How to play
- Explain the format: rung 10 = ten 1-2 punches from the puncher and ten squats from the holder with mitts up; then partners switch roles and move to rung 9 (2 min).
- Demo with one pair and try rung 10 at an easy pace (2 min).
- Ladder (10 min): count down from 10 to 1 with no set rest; the teacher records each pair's finish time on the whiteboard.
- Active rest (2 min): walk, drink water and discuss which rung made technique hardest to hold.
- Short second ladder (2 min): from 5 to 1, trying to beat the time without losing quality.
Rules
- Squat until the thighs are parallel to the floor with heels down.
- Only punch once the holder has finished and the mitts are set.
- Punch at about 60% power with a straight wrist.
- The pair stops if squat technique breaks down.
Variations
Easier
Start the ladder at 6 and squat to a bench.
Standard
A 10-to-1 ladder with 1-2 punches and full squats.
Harder
Swap squats for jump squats and punches for 1-2-3 combos.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, replace squats with seated band arm extensions.
- For students with autism, hand out a card with the rungs to cross off one by one.
- Students with lower fitness do half the reps on each rung.
Learning goals
- Keep squat technique under fatigue.
- Switch roles smoothly with a partner.
- Manage effort in a descending-volume task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- focus mitts (pairs): 13
- foam gloves (pairs): 13
Teacher tip
Remind the class that quality wins, not speed: praise the pairs with the best technique, not just the fastest. Check that nobody lifts their heels in the squat.
