Partner Pepper: Bump, Set, Hit
In pairs, students keep the ball alive with a bump, set, and controlled hit sequence, just like teams do in warm-ups. They work on keeping the rally going, controlling contact, and cooperating so the sequence does not break down.
How to play
- Partners 13-16 feet apart with one ball. Demonstrate with a model pair (2 min).
- A hits a soft downball to B; B bumps to A; A sets to B; B hits a controlled downball to A, and it repeats.
- Round 1 (4 min): one self-pass is allowed between touches.
- Round 2 (4 min): no self-pass; each pair chases its record of consecutive contacts.
- Round 3 (3 min): hit slightly to one side so the partner must move. Wrap up by sharing records (2 min).
Rules
- Hits are half speed and below the partner's shoulders.
- If the ball goes into another area, stop and retrieve it without running between pairs.
- Nobody hits while the partner is bending down for the ball.
Variations
Easier
Replace the hit with a two-hand toss and keep the self-pass.
Standard
Bump-set-hit with no self-pass, chasing the pair's record.
Harder
Move back to 20 feet and alternate a hit and a soft tip.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated with a standing partner 10 feet away, without the hit.
- Shyness: let students choose partners and avoid posting low scores.
- Advanced students: pepper in threes with a side shuffle after each contact.
Learning goals
- Link a pass, a set, and a hit with control.
- Adjust hitting force so the partner can dig it.
- Cooperate to keep the rally going.

Teacher tip
The most common breakdown is hitting too hard; remind students the goal is for the partner to dig it. Line all pairs up parallel, facing the same direction.
