Partner Pentathlon: Beat Your Own Best
A five-event end-of-year field day: partners measure and record each other's results and earn points when the second attempt beats the first. Students practice track and field skills, self-assessment, and helping each other.
How to play
- Set up 5 stations: standing long jump (chalk every 4 in), 20-yard dash (stopwatch), foam javelin (cones every 3 ft), 30-second jump rope, and eyes-closed one-foot balance (3 min).
- Form pairs and give each pair a score sheet with the five events. Send 2 or 3 pairs to each station.
- At each station, one partner makes the first attempt while the other measures and records it. Then they switch.
- Each student makes a second attempt using a tip from their partner (for example, "swing your arms more"). If the result improves, the pair earns an Olympic point (4 min per station).
- On the whistle, pairs rotate to the next station until they have done all five (20 min).
- At the end, each pair adds up its Olympic points, and every pair that improved in at least three events receives a symbolic medal (3 min).
Rules
- At the javelin station, nobody steps in front of the throwing line until the teacher says so.
- Record results honestly; your partner is the judge.
- Give tips respectfully and positively.
- In the dash, slow down inside the marked zone after the finish.
Variations
Easier
Three events instead of five, with results recorded by color instead of numbers.
Standard
Five events, two attempts, and one point per improvement.
Harder
Three attempts per event, with a target set before the second one.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt events (seated throw, wheelchair dash, trunk balance).
- Autism: score sheet with picture symbols for each event and a fixed rotation order.
- Fitness level: since everyone only competes with themselves, students at every level can earn points.
Learning goals
- Perform basic running, jumping, and throwing skills.
- Measure, record, and evaluate personal improvement.
- Help a partner with respectful technical tips.

Teacher tip
Teach the tape measure and stopwatch first, since that is where most time is lost. Put the javelin station at one end, away from the others.
