Partner Mirror Scarf Juggling
In pairs, one student is the juggler and the other is the mirror, copying every scarf toss and catch at the same time. Students build hand-eye coordination, soft overhead tossing, and close attention to a partner.
How to play
- Hand out two scarves per student and set pairs facing each other about 6 feet apart, each pair in its own space in the gym (2 min).
- Using one scarf, demonstrate three basic moves: toss with the palm up, catch by clawing down from above, and switch hands in front of the face (3 min).
- The juggler makes up a 4-toss sequence with one scarf and the mirror copies it at the same time with the opposite hand, just like a real mirror (3 min).
- On the whistle, partners switch roles; each student leads for about 90 seconds per turn (3 min).
- Move to two scarves: toss one, toss the second when the first reaches its peak, and catch both in order while the mirror matches the juggler's rhythm (4 min).
- Finish with music: each pair teaches its best 8-count sequence to the pair next to them (3 min).
Rules
- The mirror always uses the hand opposite to the juggler's.
- Toss to head height, no higher, to stay in control.
- If a scarf drops, bend your knees to pick it up and stay out of other pairs' space.
- Switch roles only on the whistle.
Variations
Easier
Use one scarf and have the mirror copy only the toss and catch.
Standard
Four-toss sequences, first with one scarf and then with two.
Harder
Add a clap or a spin between tosses and have the mirror copy it without falling behind.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the activity seated, with the partner also seated so toss heights match.
- Autism or shyness: keep the same partner throughout and preview the three basic moves with a picture card.
- Skill level: students who master two scarves can try a three-scarf cascade while their mirror copies with two.
Learning goals
- Toss and catch a scarf with either hand while controlling its height.
- Coordinate two alternating tosses to a steady rhythm.
- Watch and accurately imitate a partner's movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 50
- music
Teacher tip
Keep reminding students to catch from the top down, like catching a butterfly, since most try to catch palm up. Storing scarves by color in bags makes handing them out much faster.
