Partner Magic Carpet Rides
In pairs, one child sits or kneels on a piece of fabric, their magic carpet, and the partner pulls it very slowly around the gym. The rider keeps balance on a moving surface, and the puller learns to take care of someone else.
How to play
- Pair up the kids and give each pair a large piece of fabric. Demonstrate with a child: they sit in the middle, and you pull two corners slowly while walking backward.
- First ride: the rider sits cross-legged with hands on knees. The driver pulls very slowly around the gym. "Slowly, the carpet is magic." 2 minutes.
- Clap: switch roles. The rider is now the driver. 2 minutes.
- Harder ride: the rider kneels with arms out like an airplane. The driver makes gentle curves. Switch roles at the clap. 4 minutes.
- Magic stops: when you say "Landing!", the driver stops and the rider stays still without tipping over. Repeat several times each turn. 3 minutes.
- Wrap-up: pairs sit together on their carpet and share where they traveled. 1 minute.
Rules
- The driver always pulls slowly, walking, never running.
- The rider sits or kneels, never stands.
- Carpets don't crash: look behind you as you walk.
- If the rider says "stop," the driver stops.
Variations
Easier
Ride sitting and holding the edges of the fabric.
Standard
Ride sitting with hands on knees, then kneeling in a straight line.
Harder
Ride kneeling with arms out through gentle curves.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: ride lying on the tummy on the fabric, or drive from a wheelchair by pulling a rope tied to the fabric.
- Autism: start with an adult as driver and give a warning before each stop.
- More skilled kids ride sitting with no hands and eyes closed; kids who need support hold the edges.
Learning goals
- Keep balance sitting or kneeling on a moving surface.
- Adjust strength and speed to take care of a partner.
- Take turns as rider and driver.

Teacher tip
This only works on a smooth, clean floor, so check it first. With many pairs, have everyone travel in the same direction, like a river.
