Partner Jump Rope Intervals
Partner interval training: while one student jumps rope with different footwork, the other does a strength exercise on a mat, and they switch every 30 seconds. It improves endurance, coordination, and strength in very little space.
How to play
- Pair students up with one jump rope and one yoga mat, at least 10 feet from other pairs (1 min).
- Review four jump rope steps: two-foot bounce, alternate-foot jog, high knees, and side-to-side (3 min of free practice).
- Block 1: A jumps for 30 seconds with a two-foot bounce while B does squats; switch on the signal. Repeat 4 times (4 min).
- Rest for 1 minute walking and breathing deeply.
- Block 2: change the jump rope step every interval and switch the mat exercise to crunches or a plank (4 min).
- Block 3 challenge: each pair counts jumps without a miss in 30 seconds and tries to beat their score in two attempts (3 min). Wrap up with a 2-minute discussion.
Rules
- Size the rope: standing on the middle, the handles should reach the armpits.
- Jump on the balls of your feet and keep jumps low.
- Don't step into another pair's rope space.
- If the rope tangles, get back into rhythm without losing track of time.
Variations
Easier
20-second intervals and the basic bounce in every block.
Standard
30-second intervals with four different jump rope steps.
Harder
Add double unders or criss-crosses during the challenge block.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: swing the rope to one side of the body with both hands without jumping, or move the arms to the rhythm.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: signal the switches by holding up a sign or flashing a light.
- Lower fitness level: when tired, mimic the jump rope motion without the rope.
Learning goals
- Improve endurance through high-intensity intervals.
- Coordinate the rope swing with different jumping patterns.
- Alternate cardio and strength work in an organized way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- jump rope: 13
- yoga mats: 13
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Size the ropes before block 1: a rope that is too long causes constant misses and frustration. On concrete, ask for very low jumps to protect ankles and knees.
