Partner Hoop Routine in Four Blocks
In pairs, students compose a hoop routine made of four 8-count blocks: spin on the body, roll, toss, and pass to a partner. They work on synchronization, creativity with a rhythmic gymnastics prop, and performing for an audience.
How to play
- Give each student a hoop and each pair a task card with the four blocks: spin, roll, toss, and pass (2 min).
- Demonstrate ideas for each block: hoop around the waist or arm; roll the hoop on the floor and catch it; toss low and catch; swap hoops with a partner (4 min).
- Each pair chooses one move for each block and rehearses it without music, counting 8 counts (6 min).
- Rehearse with music and link the four blocks; add a starting and ending pose (8 min).
- Performance: each pair shows its routine to another pair, who gives one tip about staying in sync (6 min).
- Wrap-up: two or three volunteer pairs perform for the class (2 min).
Rules
- Pairs rehearse in their own area, 10 feet away from others.
- Tosses go no higher than head height.
- Before passing the hoop, signal your partner with your voice or eye contact.
- During performances, everyone else watches quietly and applauds at the end.
Variations
Easier
A two-block routine, spin and roll, with no tosses.
Standard
Four 8-count blocks with a starting and ending pose.
Harder
Add a block where partners swap hoops by tossing at the same time, or a traveling section in canon.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: create the routine seated, spinning the hoop on the arm and rolling it across the floor to the partner.
- Shyness: allow performing for just one other pair instead of the whole class.
- Skill level: advanced pairs can use two hoops each in the spin block.
Learning goals
- Compose a hoop movement sequence in 8-count blocks.
- Sync actions with a partner and with music.
- Perform a routine and give respectful feedback on others'.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 25
- music
- task cards: 13
Teacher tip
Keep the block card visible because pairs forget the order. Choose instrumental music with a strong, clear beat so counting to 8 is easy.
