Partner Flag Tag: Don't Let Go
A flag-pulling game in pairs holding hands: every pair tries to steal other pairs' flags and protect its own without ever letting go. Stolen flags are tucked into your own waistband, and partners switch every round. Students practice coordination, communication, and dodging.
How to play
- Form pairs and give each student a ribbon to tuck at the back of their waistband, hanging about 12 inches. Mark a 20 x 20 m area (2 min).
- Each pair holds inside hands. On the whistle, every pair tries to pull flags from other pairs using only their free hands.
- Each stolen flag is immediately tucked into the waistband of the student who stole it, so more flags stay in play.
- If a pair lets go, they must give their most recently stolen flag back to the pair they took it from.
- Pairs who lose all their flags keep playing to win some back: no one is out.
- Each round lasts 2 minutes. At the end, each pair adds up its flags; then students switch partners and flags are handed out again. Play 5 rounds.
Rules
- Partners never let go of each other's hand while pulling flags.
- Pull only flags; no grabbing clothes or arms.
- Flags hang loose and are tucked at the back, not the sides.
- Pairs turn slowly and call out to avoid running into others.
Variations
Easier
Pairs speed-walk and share one flag between them.
Standard
Pairs holding hands, one flag per student, and stolen flags tucked into the waistband.
Harder
Play in trios holding hands: only the end players can pull flags and the middle player protects.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student pairs with a classmate who holds onto the wheelchair, with the flag hanging from the backrest.
- Visual impairment: the partner guides with voice and hand, and the student focuses on protecting both flags.
- Fitness level: build balanced pairs of faster and slower students.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement and actions with a partner.
- Communicate attacking and defending choices as a pair.
- Protect their own flags with spins and dodges.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored ribbons: 26
Teacher tip
Make sure flags are always tucked at the back at the same height. Switching partners each round helps the whole class mix.
