Parkour Roll: Learning to Fall and Roll
A step-by-step progression of the diagonal parkour roll, which moves weight from one shoulder across to the opposite hip to absorb a fall without hitting the head or spine. Students practice safe falling, body control and confidence.
How to play
- Set up 5 mat lanes with 5 students each and explain the path of the roll: hand and shoulder on one side, diagonally across the back, out through the opposite hip.
- Level 1 (4 min): from kneeling, place the hands, turn the head toward the opposite shoulder and roll diagonally to sitting.
- Level 2 (4 min): from a squat on a foam wedge, roll and stand up in one motion.
- Level 3 (4 min): from standing, take a step, lower the body and roll, finishing on your feet moving forward.
- Level 4 (5 min): step off a 12-inch box, land with bent knees and flow straight into the roll.
- Each student moves up a level when the lane partner confirms three clean rolls with no bump on the spine.
Rules
- Always roll on mats and diagonally, never over the head or straight down the spine.
- The next student goes only when the mat is clear.
- No one uses the box before mastering level 3.
- Stop and tell the teacher about any neck or shoulder discomfort.
Variations
Easier
Work only through level 2, using wedges to help the roll.
Standard
Complete the progression up to rolling after stepping off a 12-inch box.
Harder
Roll to both sides after a light jog, choosing the shoulder on a partner's signal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice side rocking and controlled falls from sitting on the mat.
- Fear or anxiety: a partner guides the roll with a hand on the back, and the student may repeat any level as often as needed.
- Lower fitness or larger body size: stay at level 2 or 3 on doubled mats.
Learning goals
- Perform a safe diagonal roll that protects the head and spine.
- Link a landing and a roll to absorb a fall.
- Recognize your own level and progress carefully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 10
- foam wedge mats: 5
- plyo boxes: 5
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is rolling straight over the neck, so cue students to look at the opposite hip as they start. Push mats together with no gaps and make sure pockets are empty.
