Park the Hoop: Rolling Accuracy
A partner challenge where students roll a hoop so that, as it slows down, it falls flat inside a parking space chalked on the ground. It builds coordination, force control, and steering a rolling object.
How to play
- Make 12-13 pairs with one hoop each. Each pair chalks three 3 x 5 foot parking spaces at 13, 20, and 26 feet from a starting cone (1, 2, and 3 points) (3 min).
- Teach the roll: hoop upright, hand on top, one step forward, and a gentle push so it rolls straight without bouncing.
- The driver rolls the hoop toward the space of their choice; it is parked if the whole hoop falls inside the lines. The partner stands to the side and rolls it back.
- Each student takes 5 tries, then partners switch; two turns each (6 min).
- Final challenge (5 min): shared parking, both partners roll their hoops at the same time toward the same space and score only if both park.
Rules
- Roll only toward your own spaces, with every pair facing the same direction.
- Nobody chases the hoop; wait for it to fall.
- If a hoop heads toward another pair, call out hoop.
Variations
Easier
Bigger spaces, 6 x 6 feet, and only two distances.
Standard
Three spaces at 13, 20, and 26 feet and five tries per turn.
Harder
Angled parking spaces that require rolling the hoop on a slight curve.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: roll the hoop from the chair with the spaces closer.
- Visual impairment: mark the spaces with ropes for a raised edge, and the partner claps from the chosen space.
- Skill level: anyone who parks 3 times in a row in the far space uses a smaller hoop.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the push so a hoop rolls straight.
- Adjust force to control where a rolling object stops.
- Cooperate with a partner in a shared challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 13
- chalk: 13
- cones: 13
Teacher tip
Large hoops roll better than small ones at this age. The usual mistake is pushing sideways: ask students to finish with the hand pointing at the space.
