Parachute Popcorn Party
The whole group holds the parachute and makes lots of soft balls bounce on top like popcorn in a pan, trying to keep them on. Kids practice working together, gripping, and controlling arm movements.
How to play
- Everyone stands around the parachute, holding the edge with both hands, spaced apart (1 min).
- Practice without balls: small shakes ("a gentle breeze"), big shakes ("a storm"), and still ("calm") on the teacher's voice (2 min).
- Toss 10 soft balls on top: "Let's put the corn in the pan!" Gentle moves to warm them up (1 min).
- "Make the popcorn pop!" Quick, short shakes so the balls bounce without flying off (2 min). The closest child returns any that fall.
- Team challenge: make the balls roll around the edge by lifting and lowering the parachute in a wave (2 min).
- Finish: "The pan is cooling down": slower and slower, until the parachute rests on the floor with the balls inside (2 min).
Rules
- Hold the parachute with both hands and don't let go suddenly.
- Don't go under the parachute unless the teacher says so.
- If a ball falls, the closest kid puts it back.
- When the teacher says "calm," freeze.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use a few big balls and only breeze and storm moves.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use lots of balls and the wave around the edge.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, use two colors of balls: pop out only the red ones and keep the blue ones on.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold the parachute from a wheelchair or seated, using a handle or a knot for an easier grip.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: offer a spot next to the teacher and give a heads-up before big shakes.
- Skill levels: a child who needs help stands between two friends who set the rhythm.
Learning goals
- Coordinate arm movements with the group.
- Work together to keep the balls on the parachute.
- Adjust movement strength to the cue.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
- soft balls: 15
Teacher tip
Bring out the parachute only when you're ready to use it; it's so exciting that attention drifts if it's in sight. Use your voice and the kitchen story for every change.
