Parachute Laundry Day: Wash, Spin and Hang
The parachute is the dirty laundry, and the group does the wash step by step: load, wash, spin, wring, hang, and fold. Each step has its own movement, building group coordination, changes of tempo, and listening to directions.
How to play
- Children stand in a circle around the parachute on the floor. Say: "Today we are a giant washing machine. The parachute is our dirty laundry." Everyone grabs the edge.
- "Load the laundry!": take 4 steps to the middle bunching the fabric, then 4 steps back. Repeat three times (1 minute).
- "Wash!": shake the fabric up and down, gently and then hard. Slow tambourine beats mean slow shaking, fast beats mean fast shaking (2 minutes).
- "Spin!": turn sideways, hold the edge with one hand, and walk in a circle; on a clap, switch direction and hands (2 minutes).
- "Wring!": stand still and lean back a little to stretch the fabric tight. "Hang it up!": lift it high, count to 5, and lower it slowly (2 minutes).
- "Fold!": walk to the middle bunching the fabric into a ball. Run the whole laundry cycle again, changing the order of the steps (3–4 minutes).
Rules
- Move the fabric only when the teacher calls a step.
- Walk during the spin cycle, never run.
- Pull gently when wringing: nobody should lose their balance.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only four steps (load, wash, hang, fold) and do each motion along with them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use all six steps in a fixed order with the tambourine setting the tempo.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, call the steps out of order and put soft balls on top during the wash as "socks" that must stay on.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: during the spin, a classmate pushes the wheelchair, or the group turns the fabric without walking.
- Hearing loss: show a visual sign for each step before you say it.
- More skilled kids lead the cycle; less skilled kids stand next to you to copy.
Learning goals
- Match their own movement to the group.
- Respond to verbal cues and changes of tempo.
- Explore shaking, turning, stretching, and lifting movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
- tambourine: 1
Teacher tip
Act out the laundry story with gestures before bringing out the parachute. Little ones love it when you make washing machine noises.
