Parachute Color Roll
The teacher names a color on the parachute, and the group gently tilts the fabric so a ball rolls to the students holding that color without falling off. Students work on spatial awareness, fine motor control, and listening.
How to play
- Arrange the class around the parachute, standing with both hands on the edge; each student notices the color of the panel in front of them (1 min).
- Place a soft ball in the center and explain how it moves: raising your edge sends it away from you, lowering it brings it closer (2 min).
- The teacher calls a color, and the group tilts the parachute until the ball reaches anyone holding that color, who stops it with the fabric (3 min).
- Each arrival without the ball falling off is a point for the whole class, counted out loud (2 min).
- Next, the student who receives the ball calls the next color, so students lead the game (2 min).
- Finish with a route: three colors in a row that the ball must visit in order without stopping in the center (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody touches the ball with a hand; only the fabric moves it.
- Move the parachute slowly, with no shaking, so the ball doesn't bounce.
- Wait to hear the whole color before you start tilting.
- Everyone stays in their spot, with no stepping backward.
Variations
Easier
Use a big, slow ball and colors directly across from the center.
Standard
One soft ball and one color at a time, called by the teacher and then by students.
Harder
Two balls at once: one goes to the teacher's color and the other to the color called by the last receiver.
Adaptations
- Students who use wheelchairs: hold the edge from the chair, and the group adjusts its height so that panel isn't pulled tight.
- Students with visual impairments: use a bell ball and call the person's name as well as the color.
- Students with attention difficulties: give them the job of calling the next color, which keeps them engaged.
Learning goals
- Notice how the ball's path changes with the tilt of the fabric.
- Control slow, precise arm movements as a group.
- Listen and respond calmly to color cues.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
- soft balls: 2
Teacher tip
This works well at the end of the main part of the lesson when the class is wound up. If the ball stalls, ask students on the far side to raise their hands above their shoulders.
