Palm Push Balance Duel
In pairs, standing face to face, each student tries to unbalance the other by touching only palms, pushing or pulling away, until the opponent moves a foot. Students work on balance, sensing an opponent's force, and self-control.
How to play
- Make pairs facing each other at arm's length, feet together, at least 2 m from other pairs (2 minutes).
- Explain the game: you may only touch your partner's palms with your palms. You can push, give way, or pull your hands back to make them lose balance (2 minutes).
- Best-of-five bouts: you lose the point if you move a foot, touch any other body part, or fall forward (4 minutes).
- Partner rotation: one line moves one spot to the right every three minutes (4 minutes).
- One-leg version: the same bouts on one foot, switching legs every point (2 minutes).
- One-minute wrap-up: who wins more, the one who pushes hard or the one who knows when to give way?
Rules
- Palm-to-palm contact only; touching arms, chest, or face loses the point.
- Feet start together and must stay flat on the floor.
- Play away from walls, benches, and corners.
- Congratulate your partner after each bout, whoever wins.
Variations
Easier
Play with feet shoulder-width apart.
Standard
Feet together, palm contact only, best of five.
Harder
Play on one foot or heel-to-toe on a painted line.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated facing a partner who is also seated; you lose if your back leaves the chair or you lean too far.
- Visual impairment: start with palms already touching and play by feel.
- Poorer balance: allow one foot slightly in front.
Learning goals
- Keep balance against outside forces.
- Sense and use an opponent's force.
- Control impulses and respect the agreed contact.
Teacher tip
Explain that giving way at the right moment works as well as pushing, and demo it with a volunteer. Stop any chest pushes at the first warning.
