Paddle Wall Ball Target Zones
In pairs, students rally with paddles against the wall, trying to hit taped zones worth different points depending on height and side. Students work on shot accuracy, body orientation, and choosing the right shot for each situation.
How to play
- Before class, tape three 3-by-3-foot zones on each wall section: low left, high center, and low right; each section is for one pair.
- Explain the scoring in 2 minutes: the high zone is worth 1 point, the low side zones are worth 2, and shots outside the zones score nothing.
- Phase one, 6 minutes: cooperative alternating rally; the pair adds both players' points together and tries to beat its record in each 2-minute round.
- Phase two, 8 minutes: competitive play; each player keeps their own points, and the opponent must return the ball on one bounce or lose 1 point.
- Every 4 minutes, on the whistle, one player from each pair rotates to the wall section on the right to face a new opponent.
- Final phase, 4 minutes: each pair invents a new scoring rule and tries it out on their section.
Rules
- Stay behind the chalk line 10 feet from the wall.
- Never swing at the ball if your partner is between you and the wall.
- Each player calls out their points and the opponent confirms them.
Variations
Easier
Make the zones 5 by 5 feet and allow two bounces.
Standard
Use 3-by-3-foot zones, one bounce, and points based on height and side.
Harder
Only count target hits that the opponent fails to return.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student hits from a fixed spot closer to the wall, and the partner tosses back any balls that get away.
- Hearing impairment: hold up a colored card to signal each phase change instead of using the whistle.
- Fitness or skill level: students who struggle aim only at the high center zone, which is easier to reach.
Learning goals
- Direct the ball accurately to specific areas of the wall.
- Select the right shot based on their position and the ball's position.
- Work with a partner to beat a shared record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 26
- soft balls: 13
- masking tape: 3
Teacher tip
Leave enough space between pairs and keep the area behind each pair clear. To build motivation, post each pair's cooperative record on a whiteboard.
