Paddle Wall Ball Match with a Shot Tracker
In groups of three, two students play a paddle wall ball match while the third tracks each player's winners and errors by type of shot on a sheet. Afterward, they talk through the data. Students learn to analyze their own play and improve based on observation.
How to play
- Form groups of three and give each one a wall section with a short line 20 inches up; hand out a sheet with columns for forehand, backhand, volley, and serve, each split into winners and errors.
- Explain in 3 minutes how to track: make one tally mark in the box for the shot that ended each point, in the row of the player who won or missed it.
- Round 1, 6 minutes: 1-on-1 game, one bounce; the observer tracks shots and calls the score.
- Afterward, talk for 2 minutes: the observer tells each player which shot is most reliable and which one costs them the most points.
- Rotate roles and repeat two more times, so every student plays two games and tracks one.
- In each player's last game, they try to use their strongest shot more and avoid their weakest; finish by comparing data from their first and second games.
Rules
- The observer stands beside the court, never behind the players.
- Observers give feedback respectfully and start with something positive.
- The sheet records facts, not opinions: shot, winner, or error.
Variations
Easier
The sheet only separates winners from errors, without the type of shot.
Standard
Use the shot-type sheet, 6-minute games, and a 2-minute talk after each one.
Harder
Also record which area of the wall each winner was hit to.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student may always take the observer role and play one game with two bounces.
- Autism: the sheet has symbols for each shot and a filled-in example.
- Fitness or skill level: students who tire easily start as observers and play afterward.
Learning goals
- Analyze their own play using objective data.
- Give and receive improvement feedback respectfully.
- Adjust shot selection based on personal strengths.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 18
- soft balls: 9
- observation checklists: 25
- pencils: 9
Teacher tip
Put the sheet on a clipboard or piece of cardboard so students can write standing up. At first they record too late, so ask observers to call out the shot before marking it.
