Pace Prediction Run
Each student predicts how long it will take to run several laps of a course and then tries to hit that time without a watch. The closest guess wins, not the fastest runner, so students build aerobic endurance and a real sense of pace.
How to play
- Set up a 200 m loop with cones on the blacktop or field. Pair students up: one runs, the other times and records on the worksheet (2 min).
- First test lap at a comfortable pace: the runner gets their lap time as a reference (3 min).
- Each runner writes a prediction for 3 straight laps at an even pace, for example "3:30." Nobody wears a watch (1 min).
- Runners complete 3 laps while their partner times silently. Record the actual time and the difference from the prediction (5 min).
- Switch roles: the other partner runs using the same process (6 min).
- Short second round of 2 laps for anyone who wants to sharpen their accuracy, with a new prediction (4 min).
- Debrief: anyone within 5 seconds of their prediction earns a point for their pair; discuss how they controlled their pace (1 min).
Rules
- No watches or phones while running.
- Accuracy wins, not speed: sprinting earns no points.
- Pass on the outside of the loop and call out before passing.
- Anyone who feels dizzy or in pain stops and tells the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Predict a single 200 m lap with a 10-second margin.
Standard
Predict 3 straight laps with a 5-second margin.
Harder
Predict 5 laps with an agreed pace change on the third lap.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: wheelchair users complete the smooth section of the loop with their own time prediction.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: start with a visual arm drop and show times in writing.
- Lower fitness level: walking and jogging can be mixed as long as the student sticks to their plan.
Learning goals
- Develop aerobic endurance through continuous running at an even pace.
- Sense and adjust personal running pace without outside help.
- Record effort data accurately and respectfully with a partner.

Teacher tip
Many students go out too fast on the first lap; stress that the key is repeating the same pace. Keep worksheets in a box at the start line so they don't get lost.
