Overhead Choreography: Group Shapes from the Bleachers
Inspired by the choreography of Busby Berkeley musicals, the class creates a piece designed to be seen from above: shapes that open like flowers, spirals and letters that form and dissolve. It is filmed from the bleachers or a high window and the result is analyzed on screen to make corrections.
How to play
- Watch 30 seconds of an overhead-shot example and choose three shapes together: an opening flower, a spiral and the school's initial (4 min).
- Two students go up to the bleachers as the “camera” and use gestures and voice to guide the class into the first shape, marking key points with cones (7 min).
- Build the other two shapes and rehearse the transitions between them with arm movements and level changes visible from above (9 min).
- Film two full takes to music from the bleachers (5 min).
- Watch on the tablet: the group spots which areas of the shape lost form and suggests a fix for next session (5 min).
Rules
- Whoever films stays seated or standing behind the bleacher railing without leaning over.
- Level changes to the floor are controlled; never drop down.
- In the spirals everyone walks; the person in the center sets a slow pace.
Variations
Easier
One shape only, opening and closing, with no transitions.
Standard
Three linked shapes filmed from above.
Harder
Each student wears a top in an assigned color so a color pattern appears from above in one of the shapes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: takes the center of the flower or spiral as its axis, or plays the camera role if the bleachers are accessible.
- Visual impairment: is given a position next to a cone and a reference partner in each shape.
- Autism: may handle the video editing or direct from the bleachers with a written plan.
Learning goals
- Compose a large-group choreography designed for a specific viewpoint.
- Analyze one's own work using video footage.
- Coordinate a large group with clear instructions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets or phones: 2
- cones: 12
- speaker: 1
Teacher tip
If the school has no bleachers, a second-floor window works perfectly. Confirm students have photo and video consent before filming.
