Over the High Rope Throwing Challenge
An overhand throwing challenge where soft balls must clear a rope strung about 2 m high and land in scoring zones. Students learn to throw up and out, which is the foundation for the javelin and other throwing events.
How to play
- Tie a long rope between two posts or trees at 2 m (about 6.5 ft) and mark a throwing line with cones 2 m before the rope; on the far side, set 1-, 2-, and 3-point zones at 3, 6, and 9 m (3 min).
- Demonstrate: opposite foot forward, throwing arm back with the elbow high, and release while looking over the rope (2 min).
- Form 4 teams of 6 with 4 balls each; students throw one at a time while a teammate keeps score for each throw (6 min).
- Every 2 minutes, stop; retrievers walk out to collect the balls and the next team steps up to throw; nobody enters the landing area during throwing (3 min of retrieving).
- Final round: each student throws 3 times and the team adds up the points; a ball that does not clear the rope scores 0, but can be retaken once (4 min).
- Circle talk: what happens if you throw too low or too high? (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody crosses the rope until the teacher blows the retrieve whistle.
- Throw only from behind the cone line.
- Return balls by rolling or carrying them, never by throwing them at the group.
- The team with the most total points wins, not the one with the single longest throw.
Variations
Easier
Lower the rope to 1.5 m and move the throwing line to 1 m.
Standard
Rope at 2 m, throwing line at 2 m, and zones at 3, 6, and 9 m.
Harder
Move the line back to 4 m, or throw after a three-step approach with a crossover step.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: throw seated or from a wheelchair with a lower rope and a closer scoring zone.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner claps behind the rope to give direction and calls out the zone reached.
- Fitness or skill level: skilled throwers use their non-dominant hand in the final round for double points.
Learning goals
- Throw overhand with a high elbow.
- Adjust the release angle upward to gain distance.
- Take turns and follow safety rules in the landing area.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 1
- soft balls: 16
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is releasing late so the ball goes into the ground; tell students to look at the rope as they throw. Always have everyone retrieve at the same time to avoid getting hit.
