Over or Under the Moving Rope
Two students hold a long rope and change its height on the go: when it's low you jump it, and when it's high you duck under it, without touching it. It builds jumping low obstacles, judging heights, and quick decision making.
How to play
- Make 4 groups of 6, each with a 13-foot long rope: two students hold it tight and four line up about 13 feet away by a cone. Holders rotate every 3 minutes (2 min).
- Heights: "ankle" (6 inches) and "knee" (12 inches) are jumped with a running step or two feet; "shoulder" means ducking under. Try each height slowly (2 min).
- Game: holders change the height just as someone leaves the cone, and each student decides on the spot whether to jump or duck. Each clean pass earns the group a point (5 min).
- Wave round: the rope rises and falls slowly like a wave as the line goes through one at a time, picking the moment to jump or duck (4 min).
- Final challenge: each group tries for 20 passes in a row without touching the rope, then shares which height was hardest (2 min).
Rules
- Hold the rope in an open hand, never tied, and let go if someone touches it.
- Never jump anything higher than the knee: if it's higher, go under.
- Leave the cone only after the student ahead has cleared the rope.
Variations
Easier
Keep the rope still for each round, with holders calling the height before each pass.
Standard
The rope changes among three heights as each student leaves the cone.
Harder
Go through in pairs holding hands and deciding together, and crawl under a rope set at 20 inches.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wheelchair user holds the rope and chooses the heights, or rolls under the rope at its highest setting.
- Blind or low vision: use a rope with colored ribbons and call the height out loud before each pass.
- Fitness level: students who find it easy use two-foot jumps; nervous students start with ankle height.
Learning goals
- Clear low obstacles with a running step or a two-foot jump.
- Decide quickly whether to jump or duck based on the height.
- Take on the rope-holder role responsibly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 4
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Tell holders the height change should be clear, not a trick: the challenge is deciding, not tripping. Use a thick rope, which is easier to see than a jump rope.
