Outdoor Fitness Equipment in the Park: Using It Wisely

Many parks in Spain have outdoor fitness stations designed for older adults that hardly anyone uses properly. Students analyze what each machine is for, learn to use it with good form and turn it into a circuit with progressions for their own age and for their families.

How to play

  1. At the park, each group of four gets a sheet listing the machines in the area (pedals, wheel, air skier, leg swing, low parallel bars) and the quality each one trains according to the manufacturer's sign (3 min).
  2. Guided exploration: groups try each machine for 1 minute, note which muscles they feel and whether the sign explains the use well (10 min).
  3. Design: each group chooses four machines and adds a bodyweight exercise (bench squat, incline push-up) to build a balanced circuit (5 min).
  4. Run another group's circuit: 45 seconds per station and 15 to switch, two rounds (8 min).
  5. Wrap-up: which machine they would recommend to a grandparent, which to a teenager and which they wouldn't use; collect one suggestion to improve the information sign (4 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Try only three machines and skip the circuit design.

Standard

Exploration, design of a circuit with machines plus a bodyweight exercise, and swapping circuits.

Harder

The group records a 30-second tutorial for each machine to post on the school website.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Visit the park beforehand to check the equipment and get off-campus permission. If school is far away, assign it as a weekend task with the circuit handed in on a sheet.
