Operation Password: Four Posts, One Word
A big schoolyard game: teams must collect letters hidden at four guarded posts and unscramble them into a secret word. Guards rotate, and anyone tagged does a short challenge and gets back in the game.
How to play
- Setup: four posts, each a hoop with an envelope of letter cards, guarded by two students in pinnies inside an 8 m circle of cones (4 min).
- Explanation: each team has a different secret word and can take one letter from a post per trip; guards tag anyone who enters the circle (2 min).
- Phase one: anyone tagged inside a circle does a challenge (ten jumps or a 15-second plank) next to the post and goes back to base (8 min).
- Change guards and give a clue: each team gets one free letter (2 min).
- Phase two: a team that thinks it knows the word runs to tell the teacher; a wrong guess costs a letter (10 min).
- Final and wrap-up: each team explains how it organized its raids on the posts (4 min).
Rules
- Tag with a hand on the shoulder; guards stay inside their circle.
- One card per trip, and walk or jog it back to base.
- Guards rotate each phase so everyone gets to attack.
- Letters are kept at the base where the teacher can see them.
Variations
Easier
One guard per post and four-letter words.
Standard
Two guards and six-letter words.
Harder
Cards include fake letters: teams must figure out which ones don't belong.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: is the code breaker at base who arranges the letters, or a guard with a pool noodle.
- Visual impairment: large raised letters on the cards, and entry to the post guided by a partner.
- Students with reading or language difficulties: short, familiar words, and the team shares the reading.
Learning goals
- Sustain continuous, varied effort during a big game.
- Organize the team to go after several targets at once.
- Combine movement with problem-solving.
Equipment for a class of 25
- letter cards: 40

Teacher tip
Use words from the unit (for example, the names of fitness components). If you don't have envelopes, small bags or boxes work. Common mistake: the whole team heads to the same post; suggest splitting into pairs.
