Open the Clam Partner Challenge
In pairs on mats, one student curls into a ball hugging their knees while the other tries to "open the clam" within 15 seconds by separating their arms or legs. Students build grip strength, body tension, and respectful contact.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar weight, one pair per mat, and review the rules seated in a circle (2 min).
- The clam sits hugging their knees with chin tucked; the fisher kneels beside them and they practice without resistance (1 min).
- On the whistle, the fisher has 15 seconds to make the clam let go or straighten a leg, pulling only on arms and legs.
- If the clam opens, the fisher scores; if the clam holds, the clam scores. Switch roles and play 4 rounds (5 min).
- Fishers rotate one mat to the right and repeat the block twice more; finish by discussing which grips work without hurting anyone (7 min).
Rules
- Stop immediately on "stop" or two taps on the mat.
- No pulling on the head, fingers, hair, or clothing.
- The clam may not kick to defend.
Variations
Easier
The clam may only close up with their arms and the fisher gets 20 seconds.
Standard
Play with 15 seconds and free grips on arms and legs.
Harder
The clam may roll to avoid being turned onto their back while being opened.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the clam in their wheelchair, crossing their arms while the partner tries to separate them.
- Autism or shyness: let them choose a trusted partner and watch a demo with the stop word first.
- Fitness level: pair by strength and give the clam 5 extra seconds when there is a big gap.
Learning goals
- Apply force in a controlled way in opposition situations.
- Hold a compact position using whole-body tension.
- Respect a partner's stop signal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 13
Teacher tip
Praise technique (gentle leverage at elbows and knees) over raw strength. Watch that no one interlaces fingers with their partner.
