Oonch Neech: Indian High-Low Tag
A traditional tag game from India in which the tagger decides whether the safe players are those up high (oonch) or those down low (neech). It builds agility, reaction to changing calls and quick decision-making.
How to play
- Share the origin: 'oonch' means high and 'neech' means low in Hindi; in India kids play it in yards using steps, stones and curbs. Spread 6 benches and 6 mats around the gym as high zones.
- Pick 3 taggers wearing pinnies. Before starting, the tagger in the red pinnie calls 'Oonch!' or 'Neech!' to announce what is safe this turn.
- On 'Oonch', students standing on a bench or a mat are safe; on 'Neech', only students on the bare floor are safe, and anyone up high can be tagged.
- Players may stay safe for only 5 seconds in a row before leaving. About every 30 seconds, the red-pinnie tagger changes the call and everyone must move.
- A tagged student takes the pinnie and becomes a tagger; the old tagger becomes a runner. Nobody is out.
- Play 4 blocks of 2.5 minutes with 30 seconds of rest, moving the benches between blocks.
Rules
- Step onto and off the benches: no jumping off.
- No more than two students per bench and three per mat.
- Tag with an open hand on the shoulders or back.
Variations
Easier
One fixed call ('Oonch') and 2 taggers.
Standard
The call changes every 30 seconds with 3 taggers.
Harder
The call is given with a hand signal (up or down) instead of words and changes every 15 seconds.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: their high zones are hoops on the floor, and taggers chase them at a walk.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students, or students with autism: every call comes with a clear gesture and a card showing up or down.
- Lower fitness: a student may take a 15-second break by touching a wall marked as a rest spot.
Learning goals
- React quickly to changing calls.
- Choose the best safe spot for the situation.
- Learn and play a popular game from India.
Equipment for a class of 25
- benches: 6
- mats: 6
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
Check that the benches are stable and away from the walls. The mental challenge is remembering to get down when the call changes, so don't let anyone camp out.
