One-Wall Paddleball Short-and-Long Serve Game
A one-on-one wall paddleball game that adds the traditional short and long serve lines: after hitting the wall, the serve must bounce between them. Students work on placing the serve, hitting after a bounce, and learning about a traditional handball-style sport.
How to play
- Pairs at a 6 m (20 ft) section of wall. Chalk a short line on the ground 4 m (13 ft) from the wall and a long line at 7 m (23 ft), plus a line on the wall 80 cm (30 in) up (3 min).
- Serve: bounce the ball and hit it against the wall above the line; on the way back it must bounce between the short and long lines. Short or long is a fault, and the point goes to the receiver.
- After a good serve, the rally is open: players take turns hitting after one bounce or on the fly, always above the wall line.
- Play to 10 points; whoever won the last point serves. After each game, move one wall section to the right for a new opponent (3 games, 14 min).
- Wrap-up: briefly explain the roots of Basque pelota and other wall games played with paddles, such as one-wall paddleball (3 min).
Rules
- The player not hitting steps to the side to keep the path clear.
- Always hit toward the wall, never at the opponent.
- Each player honestly calls their own short and long serves.
- Wall sections are at least 3 m (10 ft) apart.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and widen the zone between the lines from 3 m to 4 m (10 to 13 ft).
Standard
Short line at 4 m, long line at 7 m, game to 10.
Harder
The serve must also land in the half of the court the receiver calls before the serve.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play from a wheelchair with two bounces and a shorter serve zone.
- Visual impairment: thick chalk lines and a bright ball; the opponent calls "Bounce!" on each bounce.
- Skill level: match by ability and let beginners use a soft ball.
Learning goals
- Place a serve so it bounces between the short and long lines.
- Hit after a bounce, alternating with an opponent.
- Learn the basic rules of a traditional wall game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- tennis balls: 14
- chalk: 6
Teacher tip
The short and long lines give the serve a tactical purpose; demo one short and one deep serve. Use walls without windows and keep groups away from corners.
