One-Minute Challenge Stations
Six stations of skill challenges that must be beaten in exactly one minute, game-show style. Students build hand-eye coordination and accuracy while learning to stay calm under time pressure.
How to play
- Make 6 groups of 4 and set up one station per group with a challenge card (3 min to demonstrate).
- Challenges: a 10-cup pyramid, two balloons in the air, one-bounce ping-pong ball into a cup, flipping 10 flat disc cones, and toss-clap-catch with a tennis ball.
- Each student gets one 60-second attempt; one partner keeps time, one counts, and the rest reset.
- Each challenge beaten earns the group 1 point; if three members beat it, add a team bonus point.
- Each station lasts 3 minutes, and groups rotate on the whistle (18 min).
- Wrap-up (4 min): each group picks its favorite challenge and tries it all together.
Rules
- The minute starts and stops on the timekeeper's call.
- Reset the equipment before every attempt.
- No diving to the floor to save a balloon.
- Cheer teammates on and never criticize a miss.
Variations
Easier
Use a 6-cup pyramid and allow two hands.
Standard
Six one-minute challenges with one attempt each.
Harder
Use the non-dominant hand or cut the time to 45 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: every challenge can be done seated at a table.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast cups and call out 30 and 10 seconds left.
- Lower skill: choose the easy or standard version on each card.
Learning goals
- Improve hand-eye coordination with small equipment.
- Manage nerves and frustration.
- Work together as timekeeper and counter.
Equipment for a class of 25

- balloons: 6
- ping-pong balls: 6

Teacher tip
Test every challenge before class to be sure it can be done in a minute. Keep spare balls handy, since ping-pong balls roll far.
