One-Foot Balloon Rally
In pairs and standing on one foot, students keep a balloon going between them with soft taps of the hand, elbow or knee, without letting it touch the floor or putting the other foot down. The activity builds static and dynamic balance, hand-eye coordination and teamwork toward a shared score.
How to play
- Give each pair one inflated balloon; partners stand 2 m (6 ft) apart in their own space, away from other pairs (2 min).
- Warm-up touches: each student taps the balloon 10 times alone, standing on both feet, to see how it moves (2 min).
- One-foot rally: partners tap the balloon back and forth while standing on one foot and count how many passes in a row they make without the balloon or the free foot touching the floor (3 min).
- Switch feet every 10 passes and use other body parts: elbow, shoulder, head and the knee of the raised leg (3 min).
- Traveling storks: while rallying, the pair moves together with small hops to a line 6 m (20 ft) away and back (3 min).
- Final count: each pair shares its best score, and the class cheers for pairs that improved (2 min).
Rules
- If the free foot touches down, the count goes back to zero, with no penalty.
- Tap the balloon gently and never grab it.
- Each pair stays in its own space and doesn't chase the balloon into other pairs.
- If a balloon pops, tell the teacher, who picks up the pieces right away.
Variations
Easier
Play with both feet down and lift one foot only at the moment of the tap.
Standard
Rally on one foot, switching feet every ten taps.
Harder
Rally using only body parts other than the hands, never the same part twice in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated, with the balance challenge being to keep both feet off the floor while tapping.
- Hearing impairment: keep count on the fingers and signal foot switches with an agreed gesture.
- Advanced students: the pair rallies two balloons at once.
Learning goals
- Keep balance on one foot while striking an object.
- Adjust the force of each tap to the balloon's slow flight.
- Work together to improve a shared score.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 20
Teacher tip
Bring extra balloons and a bag for popped ones, since balloon pieces are a choking hazard for young kids. On windy days, move the activity into the gym.
