One-Ball Juggling Trick Ladder
Each student climbs an eight-step ladder of one-ball juggling tricks, from a simple hand-to-hand toss to tossing under the leg. Students develop consistent tosses, catching without watching their hands, and the persistence to move up levels.
How to play
- Post eight numbered task cards on the wall or on cones, each with a trick drawn on it; every student takes one juggling ball (2 min).
- Explain the rule: you pass a trick by doing it 5 times in a row without a drop, then move to the next step (2 min).
- Steps 1 to 4: hand-to-hand toss at eye level, toss and clap, toss and touch your shoulder, toss behind your back to the other hand (6 min).
- Steps 5 to 8: toss under the leg, toss and turn halfway around, catch on the back of the hand, and pop the ball up off the knee (6 min).
- In pairs, one student performs the trick and the other counts the five reps out loud; switch every two tries (2 min).
- Wrap-up: each student writes down which step they reached so they can start there next class (2 min).
Rules
- The ball always goes above your head so you have time to react.
- You move up only after five reps in a row.
- To chase a rolling ball, call it out and look before entering someone else's space.
- Respect everyone's pace: don't compare your step with others.
Variations
Easier
Pass each step with three reps instead of five.
Standard
Eight steps with five reps in a row on each.
Harder
Repeat the whole ladder using the non-dominant hand as the throwing hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the tricks seated, replacing the under-the-leg toss with passing the ball around the torso.
- Visual impairment: use a larger brightly colored ball or one with a bell, and toss lower.
- Skill level: students who finish the ladder invent step 9 and teach it to a classmate.
Learning goals
- Toss one ball with consistent height and path.
- Catch the ball in a variety of body positions.
- Set and reach personal goals step by step.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling balls: 25
- task cards: 8
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is tossing forward: have students watch the peak of the toss, not their hands. On windy days, beanbag-style juggling balls work better than rubber ones.
