Old Bedsheet Parachute: Team Challenges
Two old bedsheets become cooperative parachutes with tape handles, and groups solve challenges that require coordinating force and rhythm. It works on cooperation and communication.
How to play
- Prep: reinforce the corners and four more grip points on each sheet with double tape; two groups of 13-15 (4 min).
- Waves: move the sheet in slow, fast and traveling waves (4 min).
- Popcorn: toss ten sock balls at once and keep them from falling off (6 min).
- Black hole: spiral one ball all around the sheet without it falling off the edge (6 min).
- Mushroom: lift the sheet, take two steps in and bring it down behind your back so everyone is inside; swap places underneath when your name is called (8 min).
- Silent fold: fold the sheet into eighths without letting go or talking (2 min).
Rules
- No yanking: the sheet moves together.
- When crossing underneath, crawl or crouch, never run upright.
- If someone falls, everyone lets go.
- Soft balls only.
Variations
Easier
Fewer balls and no crossing underneath.
Standard
Popcorn, black hole and mushroom challenges.
Harder
Timed challenges and gestures-only communication.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: grips from the wheelchair at a fixed spot; in mushroom, others cross toward their side.
- Hearing impairment: agreed hand signals (arms up, arms down).
- Students uneasy with contact: edge position and no crossing underneath.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with the group.
- Communicate to solve a shared challenge.
- Reuse unwanted fabric as play equipment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- old bedsheets: 2
- sock balls: 10
- packing tape: 2
Teacher tip
Old queen-size sheets are perfect; ask the parent association. Check for tears: they rip under tension. Common mistake: lifting without counting; ask for a loud 'three, two, one, up'.
