Official FIBA 3x3: 12-Second Clock and Clearing the Ball
3x3 basketball games using the core of the official FIBA rules: 12-second possession, 1- and 2-point baskets, clearing the ball behind the arc, checking the ball at the top and winning at 21 points or after 10 minutes. Each game has a student referee and a student timer.
How to play
- Explain the key rules with the card: 1 point inside the arc and 2 outside; after a defensive rebound or steal, the ball must be taken beyond the arc; after a made basket, the team that was scored on restarts from under the rim by dribbling or passing out beyond the arc; check the ball after every dead ball (6 min).
- Set up teams of three plus one sub per basket and assign a referee and a 12-second timer from the teams waiting (4 min).
- Play to 10 minutes or 21 points; from the seventh team foul on, every foul is two free throws; subs come in on a dead ball with a hand slap behind the end line; in overtime, the first team to score 2 points wins (15 min).
- Debrief with the referees: which rules change the game most compared with 5-on-5, and how many possessions ran out the 12 seconds (5 min).
Rules
- No defending inside the no-charge semicircle under the rim to draw an offensive foul.
- The timer counts the last five seconds of each possession out loud.
- Referee calls are respected; the captain can ask for an explanation after the play.
- Each team gets one 30-second time-out per game.
- No contact on screens: the screener stands still with arms tight to the body.
Variations
Easier
16-second possession and no team foul limit.
Standard
Core FIBA 3x3 rules with a 12-second possession, 21 points or 10 minutes.
Harder
Tournament with all baskets in play at once and standings by wins and point differential.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: plays at the regular basket height and their shots inside the arc count 2 points; everyone respects their space.
- Injured students: serve as the lead referee with the rules card.
- Hearing impairment: the timer counts with raised fingers and the referee uses official signals.
Learning goals
- Know and apply the core official FIBA 3x3 rules.
- Adapt decision-making to a 12-second possession.
- Take on referee and timer roles responsibly.

Teacher tip
Clearing the ball is the rule most often forgotten: the referee should watch for it in particular. If baskets are limited, alternate two games per basket in 5-minute halves.
