Offensive Rebounding: Read Where the Miss Will Land
Students record which zone missed shots land in based on where the shooter is, and use the data to anticipate offensive rebounds. Then they apply the read in 2-on-2 situations where the attacker must get around the box-out to reach the ball.
How to play
- Split the lane area into five rebound zones marked with cones (two sides, two diagonals and the middle) and hand out the recording sheet (4 min).
- At each basket, one shooter takes ten shots from the left wing, the right wing and the top while two classmates record which zone each miss lands in; rotate shooters (6 min).
- Share the class data: misses from 45 degrees tend to land on the opposite side, and long shots produce longer rebounds; each group writes its own rule (7 min).
- 2-on-2 rebounding: the teacher or a student shoots from a spot, the attackers use the rule to choose where to go and get around the box-out with a spin or a fake; 2 points for an offensive rebound and 1 for a putback basket (8 min).
Rules
- Jump toward the ball, not into the opponent.
- No pushing the player boxing you out from behind.
- Catch the ball with both hands and bring it to your chin with elbows out.
- Recorders stand outside the lane so they don't get in the way of the rebound.
Variations
Easier
Only record whether the miss lands on the shot side or the opposite side.
Standard
Recording in five zones, a group rule and 2-on-2 offensive rebounding.
Harder
In the 2-on-2, the shooter also crashes the boards, making a 3-on-2 that forces the defense to choose.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: positions in a zone using the rule and catches the ball after a bounce.
- Lower-limb injury: serves as recorder and data analyst for the group.
- Shorter students or those with less jump: a rebound after one bounce in the predicted zone counts.
Learning goals
- Collect and analyze data on where missed shots go.
- Anticipate the rebound zone from the shooter's position.
- Win position for the offensive rebound without fouling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 10
- cones: 12
- worksheets: 10
Teacher tip
Class data usually confirm the opposite-side rule: show it on the whiteboard so they can see it. Warn about landing on other people's feet and ask students to land with a wide base.
