O-Goshi Hip Throw Entries Without Throwing
Partners learn the hip entry for o-goshi, a basic judo technique, repeating the turn and the lift of their partner without ever throwing them. Students work on coordinating the turn, safe back posture, and taking care of their partner.
How to play
- Pairs of similar weight. Demonstrate o-goshi in three steps: pull forward, turn in with the hip, and wrap the arm around the waist (3 min).
- Solo T-shaped pivot footwork moving across the mat, 10 reps each side (2 min).
- Slow entry: tori turns in until their hip is below uke's, holds 2 seconds, and steps out. Two sets of five per role (4 min).
- Lift: tori bends the knees, turns in, and straightens the legs to lift uke a few inches, then sets them down gently. Three reps per role (4 min).
- 20-second sets of entries without lifting; uke counts only those with a straight back and low hips. Pairs share feedback to finish (5 min).
Rules
- Nobody gets thrown: every lift ends with uke on their feet.
- Straight back and bent knees when lifting; stop at any lower-back twinge.
- Only lift partners of similar or lower weight.
Variations
Easier
Footwork and entry only, no lift, with uke resting their hands on tori's shoulders.
Standard
Three-step entry with a short lift and a controlled return of the partner.
Harder
Moving entry: uke walks backward and tori must turn in without losing balance.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice the grip and upper-body turn seated and coach other pairs' posture.
- Autism or shyness: a fixed partner and steps explained with the same words every time.
- Fitness level: skip the lift and do entries only.
Learning goals
- Perform the o-goshi footwork and hip entry with good technique.
- Keep a safe back posture while lifting another person's weight.
- Value technique over strength in combative sports.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 24
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is bending forward with straight legs; ask tori to get their hips lower than uke's belt. Don't move on to real throws unless the class has already mastered the backward breakfall.
