Numbers Flag Rugby: Loose Ball Scramble
Two numbered teams wait on their end lines; the teacher rolls a football into the middle and calls numbers, and those players race out to grab it and play mini flag rugby to the try line. It mixes reaction time, picking up the ball, and small-sided play.
How to play
- Mark a 25 x 20 m (about 80 x 65 ft) field. Make two teams of 6 in pinnies, numbered 1 to 6, each on its own end line and wearing flag belts. With 25 students, set up two fields (2 min).
- Roll the ball toward the middle and call 1, 2, or 3 numbers to play 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3. Only those players go; everyone else cheers from the line.
- Whoever picks up the ball attacks the other team's line; the other team defends by pulling flags.
- A try is worth 1 point. When a flag is pulled, the ball carrier stops and passes backward within 3 seconds; in 1v1, a flag pull ends the play.
- Each play lasts 20 seconds max. Mix up the calls so everyone goes every 30 to 40 seconds for 6 minutes.
- After 2 minutes of rest, play another 6 minutes, reassigning numbers so similar-ability students face each other.
Rules
- If two players reach the ball at the same time, no wrestling for it: possession goes to the team that didn't have it last play.
- Players whose numbers aren't called stay off the field.
- Safety: pick up the ball from the side; no diving or bumping heads.
Variations
Easier
Play only 1v1 and 2v2, and leave the ball sitting in a hoop instead of rolling it.
Standard
Random calls from 1v1 to 3v3, as described.
Harder
Call one extra number for one team to create a 3v2 overload.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair gets a number, and when called, the ball is handed to them and nobody may defend for the first 3 seconds.
- Hearing impairment: show numbers on your fingers or on large cards as you call them.
- Fitness level: assign numbers by speed so the matchups are even.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a sound or visual signal.
- Pick the ball up off the ground safely and go on the attack.
- Make decisions in even-numbered game situations.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flag belts: 25
- foam footballs: 2
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Roll the ball toward one side rather than dead center to avoid head-on collisions. Keep a mental list of numbers so nobody gets left out.
