Numbers Call Tug-of-War
Two numbered teams sit on either side of a long rope; when the teacher calls numbers, those players run in to pull, and more numbers can be added during the battle. Students practice reaction time, pulling strength, and instant teamwork.
How to play
- Lay the long rope on the ground with a handkerchief tied at the center and two cones 6 feet on each side of the center; teams sit 15 feet away, numbered 1 to 12 or 13 (3 min).
- The teacher calls one or two numbers ("3 and 7!"); those players from each team run in, grab the rope, and pull.
- During the battle, the teacher may call another number as reinforcement; the team that pulls the handkerchief to its cone wins, with a 20-second limit.
- After each point, players set the rope down and return to their spots; play back-to-back rounds without repeating numbers until everyone has gone twice (9 min).
- Final round with every number at once, followed by a team handshake line (3 min).
Rules
- Hold the rope with both hands and never wrap it around your body.
- On the final whistle, set the rope down; never let go suddenly under tension.
- Only run to the rope when you hear your own number.
Variations
Easier
The teacher always calls three numbers so battles involve more players.
Standard
One or two numbers, with reinforcements during the battle.
Harder
The teacher calls math problems ("two times three!") and only the player with the answer runs.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can call the numbers and decide reinforcements, or go out with a partner pushing the wheelchair and pull from the end of the rope.
- Hearing impairment: show the numbers on cards or with fingers.
- Fitness level: students with less endurance share a number and go out with a partner.
Learning goals
- React quickly to an auditory signal.
- Apply pulling force in coordination with teammates.
- Respect turns and the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 1
- cones: 2
- handkerchief: 1
Teacher tip
Match numbers so each one has a player of similar strength on the other team. Use a thick rope with no knots, which is easier and safer on the hands.
