Numbers Basketball: Call-Out 1v1 to 3v3
Two numbered teams wait on the sidelines and the teacher calls one, two or three numbers: those players race to the ball in the middle and play 1-on-1, 2-on-2 or 3-on-3, while the rest serve as sideline outlets. Students work on reaction, decision-making and transition.
How to play
- Use two courts; on each, two teams of 6 in pinnies numbered 1 to 6, each team sitting on one sideline.
- Place a ball inside a hula hoop in the center circle; each team attacks the basket on its right.
- The teacher calls numbers (for example, 'Two and five!'): those players run out, whoever gets the ball attacks, and the other team defends and, if it wins the ball, attacks the other way.
- Sideline players are outlets: they may receive and pass right back, but may not shoot or defend.
- The play ends with a basket (1 point) or after 20 seconds; the ball goes back to the center and new numbers are called.
- Play 2 blocks of 6 minutes with a 1-minute break, switching sidelines.
Rules
- Nobody leaves before hearing their whole number.
- No diving or grabbing for the ball: if both arrive at once, it is a jump ball.
- When the play ends, walk back to your spot.
Variations
Easier
Call only 1-on-1 and place the ball closer to the team that arrives late.
Standard
Random numbers for 1-on-1, 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 with sideline outlets.
Harder
Call math problems ('three plus two') and baskets only count after a pass to an outlet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: permanent sideline outlet whose assist earns an extra point.
- Hearing impairment: show the numbers with your fingers as well as calling them.
- Mixed skill: match numbers by skill level to keep battles even.
Learning goals
- React to a signal and switch from defense to offense without pausing.
- Decide whether to pass, dribble or shoot in even or uneven situations.
- Enjoy the game while respecting teammates and opponents.
